WhatsApp to bring AR effects to audio, video

WhatsApp audio, video calls to get AR effects, filters and backgrounds

WhatsApp's upcoming features will make video calling more fun and convenient to use. Meta has brought in three new interesting features to WhatsApp, making the messaging app more convenient and fun to use. WhatsApp seems to be working on a feature that can allow you to edit backgrounds during video calls. The new AR effects will allow you to add fun and interactive elements to your video calls. After Snapchat, it looks like WhatsApp also plans to bring augmented reality (AR) effects for video calls.

According to reports, the latest WhatsApp update will offer three options at the bottom of a video call, which includes filters, backgrounds and effects. The latest WhatsApp beta  for Android 2.24.13 is working on an Augmented Reality feature to introduce call effects and filters in video calls. The filter tab will offer features like softening skin textures, lightening blemishes and reducing fine lines, among others. The filters will hide all imperfections and touch up the skin to make it look more polished without making it look fake. A low light mode feature will help improve the video quality in poorly-lit environments.

The  new AR effects will allow you to add fun and interactive elements to your video calls while also enhancing the overall visual experience. You can now personalize your calls by adding dynamic facial filters. Now get a more ‘connected’ feel with your loved ones with the AR-based video calls. Likewise, clicking on background tab will open up several backgrounds ranging from tropical islands to furnished office rooms. This feature is designed keeping in mind remote work settings and will come in handy when users don’t want to show what’s behind or simply to add a touch of fun to video calls. Maybe you can add a colourful and playful touch to your daily ‘black and green’ conversations.

It also plans to introduce other effects that can make video calls more entertaining and engaging. Users will soon have the option to use an avatar in place of their real-time video feed, providing creative expression options during calls. This feature can allow you to maintain anonymity or express yourselves creatively through avatars. It looks like creating avatars can contribute to ensuring privacy, looking at the reportedly rising rate of cybercrimes through social media.

In the effects tab, users will be able to see augmented reality (AR) incorporated features similar to that on Instagram and Snapchat. These AR filters will make video calling fun by displaying features such as party hats, party poppers and moustaches among others. In addition to this, WhatsApp will now enable users to send photos with high-definition (HD) as the default quality of media, eliminating the need to manually select the HD option for each photo. WhatsApp also expands metro ticket booking facility to 6 cities in India.

The new feature is expected to be available for android users in the future soon. It looks like after Snapchat and Apple decided to bring AR effects in its ‘lenses’ and ‘face-time’ respectively, WhatsApp also took part in this venture. According to reports available, another AR feature for call effects and filters is under development and is expected to be available in a future update.
