New chat themes for Android users

New chat themes are being prepared for Android users by WhatsApp

WhatsApp has been really busy recently adding new features left and right, and that's not going to stop anytime soon. WhatsApp is working on a new “Chat Themes” feature to give a makeover to the application. The latest capability is currently in the beta stage. It is rolling out to some Android beta users via the Google Play Beta Program, and will soon reach others. A new beta version of the app was released for Android users and this brings with it incipient support for chat themes. Spotted in the Android beta version 2.24.17.19, WhatsApp is introducing Chat Themes to glorify the application. Users will be able to customize the chat screen, message colours and wallpaper for their contacts and make the conversation more fun.

The feature is still in the early stages of development, but it is coming, and will let you pick a chat theme that will change the message colour and the chat's wallpaper. Further inputs reveal that there will be at least 10 chat themes to switch between. WhatsApp users can add new wallpapers to their contact chats. They can also alter the colour of the message bubble, making it far more appealing on the chat screen. If you've ever used Facebook Messenger, you basically know what to expect here, as that app has had chat themes for years. WhatsApp is, like in many other regards, just playing catch-up.

Note that this is a default chat theme feature. It means, selecting a theme will apply it to all the conversations automatically. Although the company might add an option to use the latest capability for some particular chats in the time ahead. The chat theme will also adjust the wallpaper and bubble colour based on the theme you have selected. You should note that this feature will remain confined only to your side and won’t make any changes to other’s chat, message bubbles or wallpaper. The new WhatsApp Chat Themes feature will be an interactive addition to the app. Although general users have to wait for a stable update to explore the latest functionality.

If you want to test WhatsApp beta features on Android, you need to be on the beta track, which you can enrol into from its Play Store listing. Do however note that enrolment isn't open at all times. Given how long it usually takes new WhatsApp features to make it from beta to the stable track, we assume chat themes will be available for everyone in the near future but definitely before this year ends.
