Apple iPhone 16 Pro with faster charging

iPhone 16 Pro is expected to support faster wired and MagSafe charging

Apple is believed to be increasing the wired and MagSafe charging speeds for this year's iPhone 16 Pro models. The latest rumours claim that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will see improvements in their charging rates. While the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can go up to 27W using a cable and up to 15W using MagSafe wireless charging, this year's models will allegedly take things further.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are apparently going to support 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe wireless charging. Those are, of course, peak rates, and won't be achieved for a very long time throughout the charging process. Sources reports that the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will support 40W wired and 20W MagSafe wireless charging to "balance and improve the problem of increasing charging time caused by the increase in battery capacity." An earlier rumour said that this year's iPhones, with the sole exception of the iPhone 16 Plus, will all get larger batteries.

It remains to be seen how increasing the peaks will affect actual charging time for both technologies on these phones, since that's what people care about the most. Still, it's good to see Apple advancing its charging rates somewhat, it's still quite far from Chinese companies' mainstream 120W wired and 50W wireless peaks, but it is making progress.

To recap, the Apple iPhone 15, iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 models can support up to 27W wired and 15W MagSafe charging speeds. Hence, the rumoured boost in battery charging speed is certainly much welcome. It will also help Apple compete with other Android flagship phone models. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has wired fast charging at 45W and 15W wireless charging, while the Oppo Reno11 Pro is capable of 80W wired fast charging.

On the other hand, the source of this leak claim that the point of the higher peak rate charging is to compensate for upcoming increases in battery capacity on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, basically Apple wants them to charge at least as fast as their predecessors, even with bigger batteries inside. An earlier rumour about a year ago already claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would get these exact improvements in charging, and that they would also use stacked battery technology which allows for higher capacities and longer lifespans. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are due to be unveiled by Apple in September as usual, alongside the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
