WhatsApp launches setting with Advanced Chat Privacy
WhatsApp have introduced a new privacy feature called “Advanced Chat Privacy”, aimed at offering stronger protection for sensitive conversations in both individual and group chats. It was officially announced about the launch of Advanced Chat Privacy, which was leaked at the beginning of this month. This is a new "layer of privacy" which is available in both 1-to-1 chats and groups, and it lets you prevent others from taking your content outside of WhatsApp when you want extra privacy.
The company noted that end-to-end encryption remains the foundation of privacy on WhatsApp, ensuring only the sender and recipient can view or hear messages and calls. Building on this, WhatsApp said it has added layers like disappearing messages and chat lock, with the new setting taking privacy “one step further.”. If you turn this on, you block others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone and using messages for AI features. So, WhatsApp says, "this way everyone in the chat has greater confidence that no one can take what is being said outside the chat". Unless of course people know how to use screenshots.
The company highlighted that the new feature helps users keep their conversations within WhatsApp when extra privacy is required. Once activated, the feature prevents others from:-
Block chat exports
Stop automatic media downloads
Restrict use of messages in AI features
WhatsApp stated that this gives everyone in the chat more confidence that the conversation stays within WhatsApp. WhatsApp thinks this feature will come in most handy "in groups where you may not know everyone closely but are nevertheless sensitive in nature, like talking about health challenges in a support group or organizing your community about something important to you".
The company also noted that WhatsApp groups are becoming an extension of real-world networks, where participants may not always know each other closely. It believes the new feature is best suited for sensitive discussions. To turn this on, tap the chat name, then tap on Advanced Chat Privacy. WhatsApp says this is merely the first version of the feature and it plans to add more to it in the future so it "will eventually include even more protections". WhatsApp confirmed that this feature is rolling out to all users around the world on the latest version of the app in the near future.
