Latest updates about iPhone 17

 iPhone 17: Rumours and Leaks

Rumours are swirling about next year's iPhone already. It doesn’t take long for iPhone rumours to circulate. It’s one of the most iconic and influential tech gadgets of all time, and everyone wants to know what’s coming next. Apple is also so secretive,  only heightens the appeal of iPhone rumours and leaks. So it should come as little surprise that iPhone 17 rumours, leaks and info started to circulate months before the iPhone 16 was even formally announced. Following is the everything we know so far, but don’t consider it as solid info: even when early rumours are accurate, plans can change and nothing is ever certain until Apple announces it.

A big rumoured upgrade for the iPhone 17 may not be coming after Apple had trouble getting parts of a high-enough quality. Coming from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this rumour claims the iPhone 17 won't use resin-coated copper (RCC) printed circuit boards, as originally suggested earlier. The reason is simply that the parts couldn't be made to a high-enough standard, presumably by firm Ajinomoto which was mentioned in the initial tip. RCC PCBs were meant to allow the circuitry inside the iPhone 17 to be shrunken down, since the resin coating makes PCBs stronger and more resistant to heat. This would then allow more room for additional components, or let the phone's body be slimmed down.

New ‘Slim’ model

It’s been rumoured for years that Apple is planning to launch a new model with higher-end features above the Pro Max. It looks like it may finally arrive in 2025. Several analysts have reported that the existing Plus model will be replaced by a new “Slim” model with a larger screen size and a much thinner body. Analyst Jeff Pu was the first to report this change, and The Information later reported on the Slim model, stating that it would be a new even-higher-end model that sits above “Pro Max” in the line up and would have a centred rear camera and a smaller Dynamic Island.

A recent report suggested that Apple won’t use resin-coated copper components on the mainboard due to quality issues with the supplier. This was one of the ways Apple planned to reduce internal space requirements, so it’s unclear if it will have an impact on the iPhone 17 slim model’s overall thickness or not. While it's now looking like plans for making the 2025 iPhone thinner have been scuppered, perhaps we'll still see RCC manufacturing used on the iPhone 18 in 2026. Equally, we may have to wait even longer, or never see iPhones use this tech, depending on if and when Apple can get these parts made to its specifications. Even without the slimmer frame, rumours have already painted a pretty picture of the iPhone 17 series' capabilities.

Rumoured new features

All iPhone 17 models have been rumoured to feature a 24MP front-facing camera and the always-on display is supposed to finally be available on the non-Pro models. Some believe that ProMotion will come to the non-Pro models too, since the same LPTO technology which enables the always-on display is what makes ProMotion possible, in Apple’s iPhone implementation. If true, it would be the first time Apple has offered ProMotion on a non-Pro device. Apple is also said to be working with Corning on a new anti-glare and scratch-resistant glass for the iPhone 17 line up. We don’t know much about what chips will power the iPhone 17 line, but thanks to the demands of Apple Intelligence we can expect every model to have at least 8GB of RAM. The high-end models will get an A19 Pro, while the non-Pro models will get either some variant of the A18 or a somewhat cut-back version of the A19.

When it comes to wireless, the cellular modem is likely to still be supplied by Qualcomm; Apple’s own efforts to produce a top-tier 5G modem seem to be stalled and likely won’t be ready in time for next year’s iPhone 17 line. Wi-Fi 7 support seems likely, too. We could see the iPhone 17 series gain Apple-built batteries, 120Hz LTPO displays on all models, triple 48MP cameras and an upgraded telephoto lens on the Pros, and 2nm chipsets for even greater power and efficiency. Apple jumped back on the thin train with the launch of the M4 iPad Pro in May. It’s also rumoured that Apple will launch a thinner Apple Watch and MacBook Pro over the coming months.

Colours

We haven’t yet heard anything about what colours to expect from the iPhone 17 line. The iPhone 16 is expected to launch in seven colours, with white and purple joining blue, pink, yellow, green and black. Additionally, desert yellow and cement grey are expected which are reportedly reminiscent of the classic gold and space grey options. We haven’t heard any rumours about the iPhone 17’s colours and probably won’t until after the iPhone 16 launches.

Expected Release date

The new iPhone line up is almost always announced in September, usually on a Tuesday in the second week of September, to be specific. So we would expect the iPhone 17 line to be announced on or around 09 September, 2025. Following are the most recent models details about their release:-

iPhone 12          13 October, 2020 (delayed due to Covid)

iPhone 13          14 September, 2021

iPhone 14          07 September, 2022

iPhone 15          12 September, 2023

Historically, preorders for the iPhone begin on the Friday after the announcement, and the phones ship a week later. On occasion, some specific models may ship a couple of weeks later than the others due to production issues.

Expected Price

We haven’t yet heard if the iPhone 17 line will cost the same as the iPhone 16 line, which at this time hasn’t even been announced yet. Since Apple already increased the price of the Pro Max this year, we expect pricing for the iPhone 17 to remain similar to that of the iPhone 15 line. However, some rumours suggest that Apple will release a new higher-end model which might have a higher price tag than the iPhone Pro Max.

Concluding with the present day news, we're likely less than than two months out from seeing the iPhone 16 series launch. This year's crop of iPhones, including the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, may not be tipped to get slimmer, but are claimed to gain upgrades like updated camera sensors, improved OLED screens, faster charging speeds and a new Capture button for easier photo and video-taking.
