Earlier, the app offered chat backups primarily for restoration purposes. Users could create backups to cloud storage services like Google Drive or iCloud, but transferring them between different operating systems (iOS and Android) posed a great degree of problems. This upcoming feature has the potential to significantly enhance the user experience for several reasons. Following are the some of the benefits:-

Gone are the days of grappling with cables or external tools. The QR code-based approach offers an intuitive and user-friendly solution, accessible to even less tech-savvy individuals.

Unlike previous backup options, this method transcends operating system boundaries. You’ll be able to seamlessly move your chat history from an iPhone to an Android phone, or vice versa, fostering greater flexibility when switching devices.

The new chat history transfer feature introduces a novel approach: QR code-based migration. Following steps are required for this process:-

Initial steps

Ensure both your old and new devices have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. This guarantees compatibility with the transfer protocol.

Steps to be followed

On the Old Device

Access WhatsApp’s settings menu.

Navigate to the “Chat” section and select “Chat Transfer.”

Assuming the feature is active for your account, you’ll see the “Transfer Your Chats” option. Tap on it.

A unique QR code will be generated on your screen, encapsulating your chat history.

On the New Device

Follow the same path within WhatsApp’s settings: Settings > Chats > Chat Transfer.

Select “Scan QR Code” and use your new device’s camera to scan the code displayed on your old device.

How to Transfer

Once the QR code is scanned successfully, Wi-Fi Direct technology will facilitate the secure and local transfer of your chat history from the old device to the new one. This eliminates the need for internet connectivity during the migration, ensuring privacy and potentially faster transfer speeds.

While the official release date for this feature remains undisclosed, its wider beta testing suggests it’s nearing a public rollout around the world.

Special Notes

If you receive an error message, restart both phones and start the transfer process again.

Using non-WhatsApp chat transfer apps isn’t supported and may cause loss of chats.

WhatsApp doesn’t delete your chats during a transfer and your chats aren’t lost if an error occurs.
