New blue phosphorescent OLED panels in 2025 by Samsung
A report claims that Samsung might introduce a new kind of blue phosphorescent OLED panel in 2025, although industry watchers were expecting a 2024 debut initially. It looks like the development of the new material used for the blue sub-pixels is not going smoothly. Samsung's current display technology implements phosphorescent green and red sub-pixels, but the blue diodes are still using fluorescent. So you can't call them PHOLED as it isn't technically correct. The new phosphorescent diodes offer 100% internal luminous efficiency, compared to the blue fluorescent ones which cap at 25%.
If Samsung can make proper blue phosphorescent diodes, this will potentially improve power efficiency. However, there's one big caveat to consider - the lifespan of the blue phosphorescent diodes is about 55% of the fluorescent blue diodes. It's a considerable drawback and this is the reason why some people familiar with this do not believe Samsung will be able to implement this technology into commercial products by 2025. Either way, Samsung will continue its R&D efforts as it will be the first manufacturer to mass produce PHOLED panels, potentially securing a huge market advantage in the future.
