Discovery of a 6-planet solar system

Perfectly synchronised 6-planet solar system discovered by NASA satellites

Astronomers have discovered a rare in-sync solar system with six planets moving like a grand cosmic orchestra, untouched by outside forces since their birth billions of years ago. The find can help explain how solar systems across the Milky Way galaxy came to be. This one is 100 light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. One light-year is 5.8 trillion miles. A pair of planet-hunting satellites — NASA’s TESS and the European Space Agency’s CHEOPS— are teamed up for the observations. None of the planets in perfect synchrony are within the star’s so-called habitable zone, which means little if any likelihood of life are known to us.

“Here we have a golden target” for comparison, said Adrien Leleu of the University of Geneva, who was part of an international team which shared  the results in the journal Nature. This star, known as HD 110067, may have even more planets. The six found so far are roughly two to three times the size of Earth, but with densities closer to the gas giants in our own solar system. Their orbits range from nine to 54 days, putting them closer to their star than Venus is to the sun and making them exceedingly hot.

As gas planets, they are believed to have solid cores made of rock, metal or ice, enveloped by thick layers of hydrogen. More observations are needed to determine what’s in their atmospheres. This solar system is unique because all six planets move similar to a perfectly synchronized symphony. In technical terms, it’s known as resonance that’s “precise, very orderly,” said Enric Palle of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands. The innermost planet completes three orbits for every two by its closest neighbour. It’s the same for the second- and third-closest planets, and the third- and fourth-closest planets.

The two outermost planets complete an orbit in 41 and 54.7 days, resulting in four orbits for every three. The innermost planet, meanwhile, completes six orbits in exactly the time the outermost completes one. All solar systems, including our own, are thought to have started out like this one. But it’s estimated only 1-in-100 systems have retained this synchrony, and ours isn’t one of them. Giant planets can throw things off-kilter. So can meteor bombardments, close encounters with neighbouring stars and other disturbances.

While astronomers know of 40 to 50 in-sync solar systems, none have as many planets in such perfect step or as bright a star as this one, Palle said. The University of Bern’s Hugh Osborn, who was part of the team, was “shocked and delighted” when the orbital periods of this star system’s planets came close to what scientists predicted. “My jaw was on the floor,” he said. “That was a really nice moment.”

Android Users' Favorite App of 2023

Android Users' Favourite App of year 2023

With December starting tomorrow, all the major apps and tech companies are wrapping up the year with an attempt at reflection. As tradition calls, the annual Google Play Best of App Awards have been announced for 2023. There are a few notable new titles on the list, and we will point them out. But first, let’s take a closer look at the Play Store’s vastly underplayed hit of the year, which comes from its competition.

ChatGPT is Android’s users’ choice app. It also appears as the runner-up “Best with AI” app of the year, and it makes sense if you think about where we were with AI at the beginning. The buzz around it made everyone want to try out the thing which would be replacing us all. It made companies who did not have a consumer-facing AI in the pipeline quiver, fearing they’d be left behind the trend. Google then refocused its plan around bulking up its competitor in the AI realm, Bard, a month after OpenAI released ChatGPT. You can now interact with it through Google Search and other parts of the Google empire.

The Play Store’s annual app roundup also clarified that Android users are still the bonafied nerds of the mobile world. As an Android user, we can attest to this first hand, though we haven’t played this year’s favourite game, Honkai: Star Rail. It’s billed as a Genshin Impact-like game which is more forgiving for adults with busy lives, and it’s mentioned several times in this year’s Play Store awards. The Android Users’ favourite book of the year is a manga series called That Time I Got Reincarnated By Slime, particularly volume 21. Compare that to Apple’s list of top-selling books of the year, which are much more mainstream.

Android users were also keen to stay in touch with themselves and tending to virtual spaces of calm. Some top apps include Voidpet Garden, which helps you tend to your garden of emotions, and Longleaf Valley, which promises to plant real trees in the world as it corresponds with your gameplay. The Android app of the year is one which we haven’t used much. Learn Visually shares “bite-sized lessons” with you each day. You log in, you learn something, you log out. It’s like getting on TikTok hoping to learn something, except without the problematic nature of logging onto a social network which has a bad habit of circulating misinformation. There are plenty of ideas on the official list for new apps you might try. The list of Apple’s apps of the year for iOS and iPadOS also has some gems. Take a look; maybe there’s a new app for you to add to your list.

Redmi K70 Pro

Announcement of Redmi K70 Pro Automobili Lamborghini

Squadra Corse

The Redmi event today saw the announcement of K70e, K70, and K70 Pro smartphones. The most premium among those also got a special edition in collaboration with Automobili Lamborghini Squadra Corse. To celebrate 10 years in the  business of smartphones, Redmi partnered with the racing division of Lamborghini to create the Redmi K70 Pro Automobili Lamborghini Squadra Corse Edition.

Redmi K70 Pro Automobili Lamborghini Squadra Corse

The difference between this fancy variant and the regular K70 Pro comes down to three things and the design is definitely the more obvious one. The camera island is not a rectangle but an inverted convex pentagon. The shape is a reference to Lamborghini's sharp lines, but the rest of the panel is still plastic. The two-tone Green or Yellow colours and the carbon design are purely a sticker underneath the protective panel. About the software, this limited edition will have a custom Lamborghini Squadra Corse theme, part of the HyperOS interface. The car in the background of promo images is the Essenza SCV12 – a track-only hypercar with a V12 engine - and we assume that's also present in the theme.

This is not a typical Lamborghini design, like one particular Oppo Find X smartphone from over five years ago. This custom-designed Redmi K70 Pro is the same on the inside as the regular one – Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the fast LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage and 120W charging for the 5,000 mAh battery. The final difference is the device will be offered only with 24 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. Price is yet to be announced and we assume this variant might not make it out of China to the rest of the world.

Samsung Internet

 Samsung Internet for Windows

The Samsung Internet web browser is now available as a standalone Windows app from the Microsoft Store. Samsung’s Chromium-based browser allows you to import your open tabs, bookmarks and saved pages as well as browse through your linked phone's history if you sign up with a Samsung account. Password syncing is still not available for the users.

You would require a Windows 10 or newer device to try out Samsung Internet. It supports extensions from the Chrome Web Store as well as light and dark modes. The browser comes in at just 130MB and looks just like the version found on Samsung phones and tablets around the world.
