Google’s AI-powered photo editing features now rolling out to more Pixel users
Last month, Google Photos announced that it would be making Magic Editor and other AI-powered tools free for all Android and iOS users. If you don't have it yet, don't worry; Google is releasing the update gradually. There are some constraints, but this is now starting to roll out for Pixel owners. Following are the some of the important points:-
Google had previously announced that it would be rolling out free access to its AI photo editing tools.
Older Pixel devices have started seeing Google’s Magic Editor without a Google One subscription.
Non-Pixel users will have limited free use of Magic Editor, while Pixel owners get unlimited access.
Back in April, Google announced that the AI editing tools Magic Editor, Photo Unblur, Magic Eraser, and more enhanced editing functionalities would be available to all Google Photos users in the future, with no subscription required. Google is making its AI-powered photo editing tools available to a much wider audience. Initially restricted to Pixel 8 series owners and paying Google One subscribers, features like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Unblur are now being rolled out to a broader user base. Magic Editor launched with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro to let you move, resize, or erase parts of a photo, as well as apply “contextual presets”: Sky, Golden hour, and Stylized. When you go to edit an image, there is a pulsating Magic Editor button in the bottom-left corner to get started. You “tap, circle, or brush to select,” while zooming in helps you pick out things.
This change was initially announced last month, with Google stating the rollout would begin on May 15. Now, we’re learning that this is finally rolling out to its users. According to reports available, many Pixel 7 and 6 series users notice that they’re now seeing the Magic Editor feature without a Google One subscription. One user specifically mentioned it on their Pixel 7 Pro. Going forward, all Google Photos for Android and iOS users will get 10 Magic Editor library saves per month. To make more edits, you need a Google One Premium (2+TB) plan or “be a Pixel user.” In terms of hardware requirements on Android, it’s OS 8.0+, 4+GB of RAM, and a 64-bit chipset. Meanwhile, the following AI tools will also be going free for all Google Photos users:-
Magic Eraser
Unblur
Sky suggestions
Colour pop
HDR effect for photos & videos
Portrait blur
Portrait light: Add light/Balance light features in the Portrait light tool
Cinematic photos
Styles in collage editor
Video effects
It’s unclear which devices are getting the update, as Google said it would start rolling these features out gradually. The rollout will take place “over the coming months.” These tools previously required a Google One subscription, with the company making other changes like dropping VPN by Google One in June. Magic Editor is truly a magical tool that users can use to move, resize, or erase elements from their photos, as well as apply creative pre-sets. However, this wider access comes with a caveat: non-Pixel users are limited to 10 free saves per month unless they subscribe to a premium Google One plan (2TB and above). Pixel owners, on the other hand, enjoy unlimited usage.
Google Photos users will also get features mentioned above and more, for free on Android, iOS and ChromeOS over the next few months. Magic Editor will hit non-Pixel users at a cost, though, as Google will only offer these users 10 free monthly saves unless they are subscribed to a premium Google One Plan. Google will also roll out additional AI-powered editing features to all for free “over the coming months.”
